Public speaking: Effective speechcraft

Effective and inspiring public speakers know that the crux of what they do is heavily reliant on compelling speech content. Without this, an audience will remain uninvolved with the message or argument put forward by the speaker. Consequently, effective speechcraft is critical to speaker success.

The ability to express oneself confidently and clearly, and remain at ease in front of others, can bring great rewards. People who can express themselves adeptly can persuade and motivate others. But public speaking is a learned art: it requires a devotion to personal development and continual practice.

The purpose of this course is to build on the 'Public speaking: You can do it' training course by focusing specifically on speechcraft skills. Conducted within a supportive and encouraging environment, this one-day course will focus on the following:

  • Why are good public speaking skills important?
  • What makes for good speechcraft?

  • The three Cs: Content, Content, Content

  • Organising a speech

  • Speaking to inform

  • Speaking with conviction

  • Evaluating others

  • Developing impromptu speaking

Delegates will benefit from the tuition of a facilitator who is a member of Toastmasters International, a global organisation devoted to the art of public speaking. The facilitator is an Advanced Communicator and was runner up in the UK & Ireland Public Speaking Championships 2006. At the end of the session, each delegate will be provided with a comprehensive booklet that delves deeper into the art of communication and speaking in public.

Important note: This session is open only to those delegates who have attended the 'Public speaking: You can do it' training course.

Benefits for delegates:

  • Better representation of oneself and an organisation

  • Better communication of an organisation's mission and key messages

  • Better internal and external communication

  • Improved speechcraft ability

  • Improved 1:many and 1:1 communication skills

  • Increased motivation
  • Increased confidence
